Poetry Initiative Drives Awareness for Opioid Addiction, Treatments at New Jersey Drug Rehab Centers
A public television network in New Jersey is asking viewers to submit their personal poetry pieces on addiction and drug abuse — specifically opioid addiction. The initiative is meant to drive awareness surrounding the impact and dangers of opioid addiction, and to encourage those who struggle with addiction to get help at New Jersey drug rehab centers. Poetry and writing is just one of several therapies used by addiction treatment centers to help recovering addicts express and share their personal stories about addiction.
If you or someone you care about is struggling with opioid addiction, call our 24/7 confidential helpline at 888-414-2380. Our caring treatment specialists will help you find local drug rehab centers that can help you or your loved one successfully overcome addiction and achieve sobriety.
Using Poetry To Combat Opioid Addiction
NJTV, the public television network hosting the open call for poetry, is running the initiative on behalf of a year-long community engagement project that addresses the statewide opioid overdose crisis. John Servidio, General Manager at NJTV, says that the project, called “Healthy NJ: New Jersey’s Drug Addiction Crisis,” is meant to explore opioid addiction in a personal way, and allows more community members to share their experiences with one another.
Poetry therapy is a form of expressive arts therapy that allows patients to express themselves through poems and narratives as part of the healing process. Therapists encourage patients to express their deepest, most personal emotions through poetry, and offer safe, non-judgmental environments in which patients can share and discuss their work.
Some individuals experience difficulty with expressing themselves verbally on behalf of the pain and trauma associated with drug addiction. These types of individuals often benefit from poetry therapy and other art therapies that involve painting, sculpture, and collage when working toward overcoming substance abuse and addiction.
Treating Opioid Addiction at Rehab Centers
Drug rehab centers that treat opioid addiction offer several different treatments and therapies that can be tailored to patients based on their personal health needs and preferences. For instance, individuals with a passion for art or who could benefit from expressive arts therapy may fare best with overcoming addiction at rehab centers that offer art therapies.
At the onset of opioid rehab treatment, patients undergo medical detoxification to overcome physical dependency on opioids. The withdrawal symptoms caused by opioids are not often life-threatening, but can be painful and uncomfortable enough to increase the risk for relapse. But addicts who overcome dependency at inpatient rehab centers have 24/7 access to medical support in the event cravings and withdrawal symptoms become too severe and intense.
Following detox, patients begin participating in counseling and therapy sessions that address the root causes of addiction and promote the emotional healing process. Patients also benefit from ongoing education classes and support groups that help them stay on track with sobriety. After rehab treatment ends, patients can resume their daily lives feeling healthier, happier, and addiction-free.
