Using Poetry To Combat Opioid Addiction
New Jersey residents are encouraged to write poetry expressing their experience with addiction.
NJTV, the public television network hosting the open call for poetry, is running the initiative on behalf of a year-long community engagement project that addresses the statewide opioid overdose crisis. John Servidio, General Manager at NJTV, says that the project, called “Healthy NJ: New Jersey’s Drug Addiction Crisis,” is meant to explore opioid addiction in a personal way, and allows more community members to share their experiences with one another.
Poetry therapy is a form of expressive arts therapy that allows patients to express themselves through poems and narratives as part of the healing process. Therapists encourage patients to express their deepest, most personal emotions through poetry, and offer safe, non-judgmental environments in which patients can share and discuss their work.
