New Jersey Rehab Centers See an Increase in Patients Needing Addiction and Mental Illness Treatment

A report published recently by the New Jersey Hospital Association shows that certain areas in the state are seeing significant increases in the amount of emergency patients seeking addiction or mental illness treatment. In many cases, those who need addiction or behavioral health treatment often don’t know where to turn for help, and seek the nearest hospital emergency room.

Health agencies are saying New Jersey rehab centers and other community-based settings are more appropriate than hospital emergency rooms for treating these types of conditions.

Mental Illness

New Jersey hospitals have reported an increase in addiction and mental illness patients.

The report from the New Jersey Hospital Association shows that hospital emergency rooms in certain counties saw 10% more addiction and mental illness patients in 2015 than in 2014. The purpose of the report was to present data to health providers, policy makers, and industry leaders that would help these agencies make informed decisions about expanded access to addiction and behavioral treatment centers.

Elizabeth Ryan, president and CEO of the New Jersey Hospital Association, says if one hospital is impacted by an influx of emergency patients seeking addiction and mental illness treatment, than the entire network is also being affected. Ryan says in many cases, these patients would fare better seeking treatment at rehab centers and community-based programs that specialize in treating these conditions.

Health care providers are growing more concerned about heroin abuse in New Jersey, which is also driving patient admissions to rehab centers throughout the state. The Garden State counties most affected by emergency patients for addiction and mental illness are Warren County, Sussex County, and Middlesex County.

Treating Addiction and Mental Illness At Rehab Centers

A high number of individuals who suffer from addiction also suffer from co-occurring disorders that may have led to addiction in the first place. For instance, those who suffer from depression, anxiety, and paranoia may turn to drugs in an effort to self-medicate and relieve these feelings. Over time, these individuals develop a tolerance and dependency to alcohol and other substances in their mission to block out mental and emotional pain.

Rehab centers that offer addiction and behavioral health treatments can work with patients to develop individualized treatment plans that address both addiction and co-occurring disorders. This whole-person treatment approach helps patients overcome addiction and underlying mental disorders so they can function normally in society after rehab without turning to drugs or alcohol. Patients leave rehab feeling healthier and sober, and with the skills they need to avoid relapse and properly manage their behavioral health disorders after treatment has ended.
